Are Unlimited Data Plans Going Away?

Written By Communication on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 | 2:55 PM

Unlimited cell phone plans are all the rage lately, especially with the new cell phones having the power of a computer. These days you can do almost anything on a cellular phone. You can order a pizza with an App, Order a hamburger from Five Guys Burgers and Fries with an App, in fact you can order a lot of things using your data plan with your online mobile on your phone.

Another popular use of cell phone data plans has been streaming music or movies on services like Pandora or Netflix. With Pandora you can listen to music you like and they will recommend other similar artists with new songs you might like. With the new 4.3 inch screens on the latest Android phones you can even watch some of your favorite shows or movies on your phone using Netflix. These actions have become so popular in fact that they are providing a huge strain on the major cell phone provider's data networks. Why? Simple, when something is unlimited people will keep finding uses for it. These streaming services could be the death of the unlimited data plans with your cellular phone.

In fact, so far only Sprint currently has a truly unlimited data plan with both their Simply Everything plans and their Any Mobile Any Time plans. The question is, how long can Sprint keep this up. So far T-Mobile, AT&T, and now Verizon Wireless do not offer unlimited data plans anymore with their cellular phones. Granted both AT&T and Verizon Wireless has the most customers which could be why they don't offer unlimited data. They feel they don't have to offer it to gain customers and they really can't afford to offer it at this time.

Now Sprint is the last man standing when it comes to unlimited data plans. However, is this something that is permanent, or will other providers eventually offer unlimited data plans again when technology improves. Only time will tell what will happen here. Now with tablets out there, even a greater strain could be coming to wireless networks.

So, what can you do? You probably don't really need unlimited data plans anymore. These cell phones allow you to tie into WiFi at your home, Starbucks, or many other places across the country. If you tie into your wireless internet at your house you can lower your cellular phone data usage and you won't have to worry as much about going over and getting extra charges on your data usage. Now hopefully you can get the most out of your Smartphone without going over on your data usage.
