Super Fast Mobile Broadband

When I say superfast I mean 84Mbps download speeds and 23Mbps upload speeds over a mobile phone connection. You are probably asking is this really possible and if so are we talking 2020? Yes it is really possible and 2011/2012 timeframe if the operator wishes to invest.

84Mbps DL Speeds: Dual cell HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) can provide a single user, maximum peak data rate of 84 Mbps when downloading files or images. This is achieved by having two 5Mhz cells instead of the usual 5Mhz spectrum used by operators. In addition to that the use of MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) and 64QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) modulation techniques delivers this super fast download speeds. In order for users to benefit from this service new 3GPP Release 9 mobile handsets or data cards will be required.

23Mbps UL Speeds: Dual cell HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) can offer users maximum peak data rates of 23 Mbps when uploading files or sending e-mails. Similar to download mechanism this also user two 5Mhz cells. However before users can benefit from this service they will require new 3GPP Release 9 mobile handset or data card. The mobile network they are on also would need to support 16 QAM modulation techniques otherwise a lower speed will be offered.

These are quite a jump from current maximum data rates supported on our mobile networks. In order to avoid disappointing users, networks will need to move their transmission and backhaul from fixed ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) solutions to Super fast Ethernets supporting 100Mbps+ data rates.

The other area where users can be better informed is the realistic average user data rates that are supported on their network. Everyone including this author likes quoting the maximum data rates achievable. However most people don't really know that in reality this is maximum peak data rate for one user of the cell and therefore as soon as other users start using this service then you will need to share resources. This is not really bad as most broadband services are modelled on that basis hence the main point is that users need to be better informed about the average data rates.

All mobile phone suppliers are developing new 3GPP Release 9 handsets and data cards in preparation for super fast mobile broadband offering 84 Mbps DL and 23 Mbps UL speeds. The race is on and it would be interesting to see who succeeds.
