It is absolutely vital to keep in mind that the subject of this topic is by no means a service. An MPLS network or Multiprotocol Label Switching is actually a technique. You can utilize it to provide Metro Ethernet, IP VPN (Virtual Private Network), or direct it towards supplying optical services.

Tables are provided to each router, showing them what to do with the different FEC packets. FEC stands for Forward Equivalence Class.

The upshot of this is that routers do not have to analyze the packet's title. All they have to do is use the label, to provide an index for the table. This is like reading a map book with an index for the router and the table, in turn, supplies the packet's new FEC.

The result of this is being able to give an MPLS network a "talent" for handling packets that meet certain predefined requirements, in a faster, more consistent way. It allows easier assigning of paths with lower latency (faster lines) to packets carrying real- time data. Doing this in direct IP is rather challenging, which has always been a major shortcoming of traditional routing.

Recently a lot of debate has gone on, about whether this service is part of Layer 2 or 3 of the OSI (Open System Interconnection). The major reason for the confusion is that the MPLS network technique can't logically fit into one of the seven OSI model's layers. In fact, one of the major advantages of this is being able to separate the mechanisms for forwarding, from the principal data linking service.

Further adding to the confusion, is that the two most widely used implementations of this technique are on two different OSI layers. The first of them is the Border Gateway Protocol, which is a Layer 3 service. The second of the most popular implementations is the Layer 2 pseudo wire VPN.

What Is A T1 Line And What Types Are Available?

A T1 line is basically a type of telephone line. They are not the standard and widely used telephone line as they are made out of certain copper or even fibre optics and they can provide the user with a degree of being able to move large streams of data much more quickly than they could with a conventional cable.

T1 lines were made for use in the Japanese and North American markets but are becoming installed in many more countries than these. Made from twisted copper, these forms of telephone lines have become the standard for quite some time now. The lines have been used in the past for the transmission of voices and also data through the older analog signal that was used.

However, there is an upgrade underway to replace all of the older copper wires with the fibre optic but as of today, there are more copper lines around the world than there are fibre optic.

There are around ten different versions of T1 lines and here we will talk about the three main types that are used should you decide to buy a new cable.

The first type is the voice cable. The main advantage of this is that just one cable can actually handle up to twenty four telephone calls at the same time which can be very useful for businesses that have a high incoming call volume. It is able to do this by actually compressing the amount of bandwidth of 64 kbps for a standard call down to around 8 kbps without detracting from the call quality.

The second type is a channelized line. This works by splitting this into twenty four equal parts. Each of these separate parts are able to transmit speeds of 64 kbps and this form can also be attached to a PBX directly.

The third and final type that we are going to discuss is the ISDN PRI. The main difference between this and the other forms of T1 are that the ISDN use one of the twenty four channels available to be just a data channel only.

This is useful to have if you run a call centre environment as the features that come with this type of cable are things such as caller ID and the main feature is that you are able to display information about that caller on a computer and if they have any history of calling you in the past.

As we can see people slowly getting used to this type of new age technology, there are many different types of T1 lines to choose from and you should make sure that you are getting the right line for your needs.

With the upgrade happening around the world, it will not be long before we are all using these faster forms of communication and data transfer cables. Born in 1950 made me a baby boomer, a part of a population explosion as the world woke up from the second world war which had just kick started the greatest technological developments in all of history.

No one asked if there was enough money to do what was humanly possible in war time. If the raw materials were available and with inventiveness not restricted by Keynesian economics if it could be done it was done.

With national survival as motivation what was achieved in six years was nothing short of staggering. With everyone pulling together the production figures reach levels never believed possible.

Looking back, just six years with no financial restraints gave my generation the ability to live several lives.

All the varied things I have been able to do have only been possible from 1945 onwards.

As a private pilot the war effort gave me new aircraft design with reliable engines that were safe. Navigation aids for radio direction. VHF radio for contact with air traffic control. Gyroscopes were making artificial horizon, instruments for flying in clouds. Radar, GPS, even moving maps came via computing another second world war development.

In 1990 I set out to sail around the world in a fifty foot steel yacht. Again prior to the war it would have been only a rich man that could build a twenty six ton yacht. In this vessel I had a depth sounder unheard of before 1939. The war gave me accurate charts. GPS and map on my computer laptop made navigation so safe. My H.F. radio meant I was always able to contact maritime control by skipping radio signals off the ionosphere.

It was rocketry developed by the Germans that was the start of going into space. How blessed to have an Iridium satellite phone incase of medical emergency.

Television was also an offshoot of radar both required a cathode ray tube

All the strange new materials. Plastics, rayon, fiberglass have only available to the ordinary man since 1950. I used Dacron sail cloth when building hang gliders in 1974.

T61636 structural aluminum I used in ultra light aircraft and then carbon fiber when building a fiber glass home built aircraft.

Could any working man prior to the war build with any of these high tech. materials?

In sixty years I have traveled to 31 countries. Sailed in command 54 thousand nautical miles. Flown 450 hours in my own light aircraft, countless thousands of miles by jet aircraft.

Had access to medical technology that has photographed my intestinal tract, scanned how thick the plaque is in my heart arteries and given me graduated lenses in my glasses.

Now I have access to a thousand libraries at the push of a button. Over a thousand CD's of music. The ability to make a high definition movie and do full editing on a home computer.

Before you go looking for people you once dated or were buddies with in high school, you need to realize that some resources are a lot better than others. Some resources can be used for free, while others charge. Just because a site charges for records, though, doesn't mean it is any better than a free one. Perhaps easier to use, but not necessarily better.

And, as with many things on the Internet: user beware. There are some people search web sites that deliver incomplete or even outdated information after taking your money, and free sites that are nothing more that scams to gather data about the user. So be careful!

Now, let's start with the various free resources that can be utilized. Social networks are usually a good place to start. Almost everyone has a Facebook or a Twitter account - and usually these sites have enough information for you to start your people search. If you already have an account on a social network site, typically, you can request that person as a friend or send them a message and get caught up with them from there. Often, where they are living and whom they might be married to is also listed. Many times, they list where they work. Even their friends can be a source of information. All of this information can help you track a person. Even if the person doesn't respond, their friends might be happy to give up some information.

If you weren't on really friendly terms with the person you're searching for, some users of social network sites are obsessed with having as many friends as possible, and may still gladly add you. Once you are in their inner circle, it doesn't matter if they have their profile set to private, you can now view all of their info.

Another huge and often overlooked way of doing a free people search is through the county where they live. Once you've narrowed down which city or county they live in, there are plenty of public records available to find out where they live. The county recorder or tax assessor in the county where they live is an excellent resource, provided they have online access. Most larger counties do make their public records available on the Internet, but not all counties. Even if you have to go with the old fashioned way and call them, it's still a free people search. And if you noted who they might be married to, the property could be in the spouse's name.

Voter registrations are also public record, and addresses can be obtained via online people search with the county registrar if they have it set up. Otherwise, pick up the phone and make a call. Any public record has to be disclosed upon request.

Finding phone numbers with a free people search can be a trickier proposition, as most white pages type people searches only return phone numbers that are already listed. If the person you're trying to find has an unlisted number or doesn't want to be found, you've got your work cut out for you. However, if they have provided their unlisted phone number to say, the county voter registrar, that info is now a public record. So always start with county and municipal searches, as people tend to keep these better updated.

Don't forget, however, that white pages type sites also have reverse phone lookups. So if you have a possible phone number, you may be able to find out whose name is attached to it. It might not show in their name, but since you already know from their social networking sites that they're married to, and that name matches, you've found them. Got a possible address? Plug that in, and see what names come back. Lastly, there are a few legitimate sites that have extensive enough databases to get unlisted phone numbers.

Follow these five bits of advice to succeed on the podium:

1. Get a good sense of the lay of the land
Whenever possible, speak with the event organizer to get a clear understanding of what is expected of you. Find out how long you are supposed to talk as well as the time allotted for other activities such as the introduction and Q&A session. Ask who else is going to speak, in what order and for how long. That way you can avoid surprises.

2. Knock down the barriers between yourself and the audience

4. Leave time to pause

Listeners enjoy them too, as they provide a break and a chance to reflect on what is being said. Pauses can also heighten the drama of a speech. Write in a pause after a question, or, to add to the intrigue, just before you say something really important.

Most speakers aren't skilled enough at handling humour to get the audience rolling in the aisles. Nor should they try. That's what comedians work hard to do, with varying degrees of success. Audiences are more than happy with the kind of humour that elicits a smile or a few chuckles. Quips, one liners and personal anecdotes all hold the potential to warm up the atmosphere, allow you, the speaker, to express some personality and give the audience a chance respond through smiles, laughter or even applause.

Is TEM Right for Your Company?

The service of Telecom Expense Management (TEM) has come under fire recently. I was attending a Telecom Expense Management summit put on by CCMI and the person in charge actually referred to TEM as an application and compared it to Spellcheck.

Recently, members of Telecom Talk debated the ability to produce a ROI from TEM. The members seemed to come to an agreement that there is some initial return, during the first year, when audits are performed and billing errors are discovered and unnecessary services are identified and removed, but that it's hard to justify the expense of TEM in the 2nd and subsequent years.

When is TEM is not a good option:
    * For smaller businesses.
    * For established businesses, not in growth mode.
    * Businesses with full time telecom people.

If your business is operated out of just a few locations, your telecom services shouldn't be too difficult to manage. A company controller should have the time and understanding to review bills; to look for inconsistencies, billing errors and third party charges.

Businesses that have a set number of locations, with a static phone and internet service inventory, fall into the same category as smaller businesses. Their service inventory and billing shouldn't be too difficult for IT, accounting and bill processing staff to manage.

If you have full time telecom people, they should be on top of your company's voice and data services and the bills they generate, or why are they still employed? The practise of steering roaming traffic has become widespread in the mobile industry. It allows operators to decide which partner network their subscribers use when in another country. It therefore allows roaming managers to negotiate with each other, and reach agreements, on price and other issues. This is great if you are the favoured partner. But what if you are not?

It can be very tempting to use anti steering. This offers the chance to get more traffic which you have not had to "pay for" by offering a lower price or by sending the partner operator more of your own roaming subscribers. It can be particularly tempting for new operators that do not have many outbound subscribers of their own which they can offer in "exchange" for inbound traffic. We are often asked if we can offer "inbound steering" or "roamer retention"; all are essentially euphemisms. Some vendors of steering platforms have taken out patents on anti-steering techniques. In our roaming health checks we often see the tell-tale signs of it being used. Many operators suspect that they are the victims of the practise themselves (although often the actual poor performance that they see is because of the algorithm used by the steering platform itself). There is therefore little doubt that anti steering is being used. However is it a good idea to use it yourself?

If you use it, it will definitely bring you more traffic and more revenue. It is also likely that the value of this will outweigh the cost of running the anti-steering system. So, at least superficially, there would seem to be a business case for using it. The extra traffic and revenue will have been won at the expense of other operators and by deliberately frustrating the desires of your roaming partners. You may or may not be worried by the ethical questions that this throws up. However you should certainly be worried about the potential reactions from your roaming partners. If your partners knew that you were using anti steering, they would certainly not be happy about it. They may react by adjusting their steering percentage targets to try and compensate for your anti-steering system. They may implement new anti-steering resistant platforms. Ultimately they may decide to cancel their roaming agreements with you altogether. The GSMA is also making increasingly strong comments about the practise. It is possible that operators could be ejected from the GSMA if "found guilty".

Perhaps you still feel that the need for more roaming revenue is overwhelming. If so, before you implement anti steering, you should consider alternative ways of boosting revenue. We have seen how a full analysis of roaming traffic, for example through one of our roaming health checks, can show several ways in which revenue can be boosted. These include fixing missing roaming links and implementing dialed number correction. Outbound roaming can also be boosted through welcome messages and dialled number correction, making you a more attractive partner. All are highly effective ways of boosting revenue without running the risks inherent in anti-steering.

What is Dynamic Cell based Discounting?

On any weekday over the 24 hour period for a typical operator more than 80% of the available radio network capacity is wasted! Dynamic Cell Based Discounting is a system designed to help operators get more use from this unused capacity. It also helps to boost ARPU from lower income subscribers and to offer a viable service for very low income subscribers. Dynamic discounting works by offering discount to the most price sensitive subscribers based upon the time of day and the cell to which the subscriber is attached. This encourages the subscriber to make calls away from congested areas and at off peak times. Typically a dynamic discounting system creates tariff tables based on information from the network. These tariff tables are then used to determine the billing rates.

The tariff tables are generated using price elasticity curves and utilization curves. The price elasticity curve is generated using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Markov chaining. This allows a very accurate and network specific demand function and price elasticity curve. The target is to maximise revenue. This means that the system attempts to increase the overall revenue through an increased usage that more than offsets the lower prices offered. It is much more than simply offering an "off peak" discount. To take an extreme example: On the highway at night there might be a very low overall usage and network utilisation. However there is very little latent demand. So offering a discount is unlikely to result in significantly higher usage. The system would not, therefore, suggest a discount. Typically the subscriber will be told about the discount using a cell broadcast system. Sometimes a USSD system might be also used.
